Newspaper clippings relating to art treasures in Italy during World War II, 1943-1945 (bulk 1944)

Collection of newspaper articles, chiefly from The New York times and the New York herald tribune, dated Nov. 8, 1943 to Oct. 5, 1945. The articles report the actions of the German and Allied military forces, as well as those of the Vatican, in regard to the preservation, pillaging and destruction of movable works of art, library holdings, and historic buildings and monuments during the German retreat from Italy. Significant topics covered include the pillaging and destruction of the Montecassino monastery, and the deliberate burning of two galleys of the Roman Emperor Caligula by the Germans. One article reports the removal by the Germans of art treasures from the Cathedral of Strasbourg, France.

Janet S. Byrne was a curator in the Department of Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During her 47-year career at the Museum, she developed a picture file of bookbindings and their descriptions that was rediscovered in the fall of 1993 when the Department of Drawings and Prints was preparing a survey of British illustrated books.
